Where to Start for a Noob?

I have a really good friend, and he wants to get involved with online stuff. He knows absolutely nothing about the market in which we are all submerged.
What would be the best way to help him start to learn about the market? He doesn't know coding nor design nor have any specific talents, but he is willing to set aside time to learn and get into the business.
Any suggestions?

I guess it depends exactly where he wants to get started.
For example, if he wanted to get into Affiliate Marketing, I would suggest Rosalind's Super Affiliate Handbook.

I'm still a noob. Just read the various forums that are available to you. There is almost an unlimited amount of resources. Just by reading and particpating in the forums, you get first hand experience of what works and what doesn't. It's a great place to learn. I know I'm having fun while learning the ropes.

I think the best way is .......drum roll please
Just get started now, Thats How I did, you can buy many scripts, (arcade, myspace etc) turnkey, and with out much knowledge start making some money, there is no way better than just getting started, we all started small, well most of us anyhow and worked our way up
Instead of watching tv, = read the forums
Instead of reading the cereal box, = read books (html , php etc)
Directing him to this forum, would be a good choice as well

I agree with sundaybrew, throw him in at the deep end. Give him a turnkey script and provide him with a domain as some sort of gift to help him get started.
Link him to webmaster resources, forums and tutorial websites. He will soon find his feet.
Be a mentor

Find someone who has had success [make them prove it] and then offer to help them out for free. It is the fastest way to learn and then you are learning stuff that is proven to work.
Currently I pay for a coaching/mentoring program from someone who has done well over 7 digits a year and it is best thing that I have done.

Hey,
I'd suggest that you first think about what you really truly enjoy doing before you go and start something just for profit. Remember in this business, you need to have a large reader base to actually make any money. Readers aren't dumb and they won't visit your pages unless you provide actual quality content -- something which you can only give if you really love what you're working on.
Anyhow, I have a set of tutorials on my site that might help.. kind of a blogging for profit for beginners:

See, JohnnyCash's idea was good until you got to the "pay someone for a coaching".
I have actively pursued a couple of individuals that I could tell were high earners, yet no luck.
I think imersion is indeed a good part, but a mentor who can be there and give the appropriate directional nudges and also say 'stop' at just the right moment is crucial.
So... PM me. I am fast learner.

I think if you are going to find someone who is a good mentor, you're going to have to pay one way or another. If not with money then with your time.
The best way to approach a mentor is to say: "what can I do for you?" knowing that you will automatically be learning. Rather than "what can you teach me?" which to a successful person sounds like work...which is the last thing they are interested in.

I'd say get them started learning about actually making a site - that could be hand coding HTML and CSS, or just with Dreamweaver or something.
The idea is they get a real idea about what is involved and learn how to do stuff so they feel like they change some things around, add things and stuff on their own if they want.
Once they've got their own site up that they can change, update, edit on their own, then get them to start reading about adsense and stuff as a starting point.

Getting started is a very important step, even if they don't quite know where they are going.
I'd suggest seeing more of what his offline strengths are, and show him ways to use that expertise or ability to develop a site that will showcase that passion and develop into his own niche.

I have no issue with sweat equity. I just cannot shell out hard currency - that is why I want to learn so I get some!

Or, instead of investing the time to learn HTML, PHP, CSS, and so on, team up with someone who already knows the coding side. For you to be truly passionate about what you are writing, you probably don't want to distract yourself with the intricacies of the backend. Concentrate on your content. Team up with a coder... many will do it just to build their own portfolio. Others may want a cut of the profits, but it is worth sharing to not have to code the site yourself.
Remember, in most cases, you are considered a publisher of content. You aren't a publisher of HTML, PHP, or CSS. Those are just part of the vehicle.

I disagree with what you're saying.
The best way to make money as a "n00b" is to learn. Do your research, ask others questions, get advice on your websites. Acting like you're not a "n00b" won't get you anywhere. :wheelchair:

I did give him a couple links where he could get started reading some material. Still listening and looking for all other advice as well, so don't hold anything back.
