Hi all,
I am looking to starting an online magazine site.
Can someone give me some good tips on what to concider on desiding to offer a paid subscription to the site also? At what point should I implement it? Any good open source software that you recommend for this (I am using joomla).

hey John,

If you have a new site, I don't recommend having a subscription yet. You should wait till you have half of the free members you set out to acchieve, only then you want to implement subscription option. I would also try to keep the paid subscription only visible to free members and not guest because you don't want to scare people away before they even signup for a free account.

You also want to offer exclusive content rather then just new forum additions or badges etc... you want to give an offer they cant refuse. You either do it right or dont do it at all.

Good luck.

Hi J,

What works well for me on my subscription sites is upselling at point of purchase. The ebook or whatever can be purchased solo ($49.95), or they can immediately upgrade to "master ______" ($24.95 to join and $9.95 a month). Pulls well.

For software, ijoomla is a joomla magazine plug-in. I think it's only $50.

I use Joomla and Ijoomla before and I think Joomla! sucks. It is way too limited for me I find.
