Just a curiosity. How did many of you start off?
I'm very new to this and I'm not sure what to do. I'm sure I can write content on a blog to start getting traffic trickling in, but I'm not really sure what other extra things I can do.
Currently I have one website (that I can't post yet since I haven't posted enough :-p but it's in my sig) but that's about it. Currently I have wordpress installed on it and I have a few entries on there.

What would the experienced folks suggest?

There are many ways to make money online. You can make money through affiliates (PPC, CPA, etc.), website development, advertisements, domain selling/parking, and other methods. I started out by developing a website, advertising it, and using Google Adsense. I earned $100+/month like that (through clicks). I'm planning on launching new websites soon and have a goal to earn much more than $100/month.

There are no specifics. Just try stuff out till you find a way that works.

I started out with private advertisers. I started my site in 2003 and basically sold banner ads to private companies on a per month basis. April 2005 I added adsense to my site and started earning through that. It wasn't until March of this year that I really started making good money with adsense after gaining alot of information on ad placement and seeing a nice increase of traffic on my boards.

That's my story. I am now beginning to experiment with IntelliTXT and CPA ads.

Hi K Dogg Funkstah,

More then anything, find a problem and try to solve it with unique content, user centered design and blended ads. Also, do research to see if users come online for the problem you decide to tackle. Take Lee, he solved a problem for people wanting to communicate about cruise lines and determine which line is best suited for that individual.

Be creative and a great problem will present itself for you to solve.

Um..hum..that approach may be too time consuming for most people. What does 'user centered design' mean?

I have just started a fairly niche site about fuel economy etc about a a month-ish ago. I didn't bother advertising at all and I'm just letting google et al bring me traffic for now and see how it goes.

This site doesn't have loads and loads and loads of content (its in my sig if you want to look) - its only got about 15 pages in the entire site - but its making me about $2 a day now, or about $60 a month. I'm only getting between about 50 and 100 uniques a day, so you dont need loads of traffic either. Hopefully mine will pickup and break the $3/day thing when google gives it a page rank

I started by making "niche" sites [lots of them] and putting AdSense on them.

Currently, worried about how Google operates and wanting to liberate myself from the bottom of the internet business food chain, I now make my own Informational Products and I am putting together a network of sites that I will use to sell traffic from.

Creating niche sites is a good why to start though, you learn SEO and you can create some cashflow relatively quickly, but it is also a trap IMHO.
