I think it depends a lot on your topic. Here are some examples:

If I'm a denistry directory, possible niches for me could be New York Dentists or a directory of densists who use a particular laser technology.

If I'm writing automotive reviews, my niche could be only reviewing hybrid vehicles.

But remember the most important part is you know and you're passionate about the topic.

Knowing or being passionate is an old myth, you don't need both to make money. This gives me a blog idea.

Nichebot is nothing more than a scaled down version of Keyword Discovery, which helps you find keywords similar to the one you entered. They are ranked by search volume. The more people searching for your niche, the more competition you will have.

99% of so called 'niches' aren't worth pursuing is you are looking for SE traffic.

I personally dont care if a niche has competition or not, just as long as there is a big market for it then am in. See what is out there and do it better. So if you like a perticular topic then just do it and make sure you give it your best.

That is just flat out great advice. When you face competition, you have a steeper climb to get to the top of the mountain, but the rewards are usually much greater when you actually get there.

My role of thumb is never go for a nitch that has less then 3000 searches. Great niches have an abundance of low hanging fruit (keywords).

Even some of the kewywords with just 100 searches a month can be very hard to rank in.

Otherjohn sounds like you need a subscription to popular or most searched for niches or keywords, then you need a program that will take that general keyword and show you hundreds of related keywords with the amount of searches and for each word. Some programs give you extra information to help you decide if competition is too stiff to tackle a keyword, also a search in google gives you the amount of websites with that keyword. Maybe nichebot or nichetaxi does this I dont know but dont just throw up a website on keyword cause its popular.

I agree with this, though there are a few sites I started a while ago that I learned about the topic over time, and made money as a result.

While I could write volumes on how to pick a topic for your site, etc., I'm just going to recommend two tools to you. These tools are very helpful in determining what kind of competition awaits you in a proposed niche, and they might even turn you on to new niches.

Here they are:

Overture - Basically, put a phrase your interested in and see how many times it was search for last month. For example, if I'm interested in writing about dogs, I'd put in "dogs" and see what comes up. From this, a list of your search term followed by related search terms will come up and show how many times that search showed up in the database last month. I would say anything over a couple thousand is pretty decent.

Wordtracker - Once you've found a popular term in Overture, you can use Wordtracker to see what your competition looks like. It has a free trial, but it is a pay service for normal use (I pay for a yearly subscription). Basically, say we've settled on "dogs", you put it in Wordtracker and it comes up with related keywords. Select a keyword, and then it comes up with terms related to that keyword and their search popularity. You pick a few of these results and do a competition search. In the free trial, it only allows you to search MSN, but if you pay you want to pretty much restrict it to Google. The end result is a list of your terms with a corresponding percentage. This is basically based on the amount of competition for that keyword vs. the amount searched. You only want keywords over 10%.

Sorry for the essay, there's a lot more you can write on this topic, I might end up writing a series on it for my site and I'll post a link if I do.

Good luck!

P.S. - Can't post URL's yet, bah :crying:

You must be so hungry for money you don't give a crap what you write about or you must get really juiced by the subject. Because even if it's the best niche ever in the history of niches you will have to go through miles of desert before you get to the Oasis.

And that desert is very hot and their aint an ice cold Dr Pepper to be had for miles.

It's true, you don't need passion or knowledge, but you have to be a certain kind of person who could succeed without those two things. That kind of person would probably succeed at anything they do, but I reckon that kind of person is one in a thousand.

Also, not everyone can do the niche thing, I find it really hard to stay on focus and tend to do small, intense projects that I can walk away from as they keep earning.

I think you're asking the wrong question.
