Proxy sites, how well do they earn?

Im about to start a basic proxy site. Ive got a killer domain and great idea for a unique theme that I think people will love. That being said, how well do some of even the bigger proxy sites perform in terms of earning?
Would love to see some figures from any of you who run a high traffic proxy site.
Also, somewhat related. But if you are earning a good amount, what has been succsessful in terms of monetization? I see alot of them with google adwords. Is this the best route?

I have one, it earns between $0.50 - $1.00 a day on Adsense. While it may not seem that much, it require ZERO maintenance and is covered under a hosting plan I use for other sites. It's basically free money for me while I sleep.

Not bad actually. If you think about it, thats probably your hosting bill covered each month.
Can you give me some traffic statistics? and a link to your proxy? THanks.

Actually, I only pay about $7 a month through BlueHost, so I make a small profit on it =).
From Google Analytics -> I get about 80 hits a day and rising. I haven't done any SEO on this guy at all, and I'm not sure that I will. All of my traffic comes from the directories I submitted to, occasionally a link from one of my other sites, and word of mouth.
I dont' have access to my bandwidth usage where I'm at right now, but it's nothing really special so far, only been open about two weeks.
Here's my proxy: trickypanda.com
Good luck!

Cool. Not bad!
So what did you do to start advertising your proxy when you first opened it?

My proxy site just started kicking *** the past week. I haven't touched it since I installed it on my server but it's been getting steady traffic and it just recently doubled/tripled. From there, I slapped on a few YPN ads and it's making a few bucks a day. Not bad eh?

I used Adwords for a bit, spent around $75 on it, and then submitted the site to a bunch of proxy lists, and traffic just kept increasing.

My proxy makes around $10 per day with popups.
The good thing is that the site took me only about 8 hours of work (including the promotion) to do it, so I am very sattisfied.
BTW you should remove the adsense ads from your proxied pages, because it is against google's TOS (ads must be contained in content that you own)

What AD network are you using for the popups Nikolas? because I am not making much with adsense because the ADs are placed on the home page only.
Also have you noticed any decrease in the visitors because of the popups?
Thanks

I haven't noticed a decrease, and actually my proxy is having more traffic than before
Right now I use right media (yield manager) and adversal, but I can't express an opinion as I haven't recieved a check yet from both (checks in greece are coming with a big delay....)

Wow, interesting. 10 bucks a day? Now that sounds more like it. I'm very hesitant to throw popups on any site I own though no matter what it is.
Anyone else have some results with free proxy site + popups?

I actually used to take the same attitude towards my sites, and i still hae non pop-ups on any of them, but my attirude did change. See, most tech-savvy and people who are "on the ball" with the internet already use Firefox, or pop up blockers. Therefore i realized the other part is either ignorant enough to not know what's happening or, they just don't give a ****. Nothing wrong with pop-ups in days when you receive over 500 spam mails a week.

Point taken. So do you still get credited for popups served that are blocked by the users browser?
I know 0 about how popups payout. whats it like 1 cent per popup recieved or something? Or is it PPC?

With a good design your proxy site will do good.. Other proxy sites just have the basic boringish proxy look.. Try to add more to it.. If you want an example PM me...

I have what I think could be one of the coolest Working on it now and its starting to shape up nicely. Great colors, graphics, and a really sweet theme that ties into the domain name.

I have a theory about the popularity of proxies and stuff changing rapidly...if you dont mind me asking, but is the majority of this increased traffic from the same IP range?
I imagine the situation goes something like this - someone at a school or a college or an office somewhere cant access MySpace or Hotmail or something, they find your proxy then tell all their friends to use it too. So you end up getting a big surge in traffic from the same institution or something until their IT guys notice and block your site.
Anyone confirm that? I'm kinda thinking about setting up a proxy and doing some guerilla marketting with leaflets and stickers and stuff at local schools sama:
