Hello All:

We have exclusive rights to a DVD seminar and accompanying book that we plan to sell online.

The theme is finance, and the target audience is very smart, but not exactly affluent.

The 'live' seminar tickets cost $395 and the program lasts about 4 hours (with breaks.)

The DVD is edited down to just over two and a half hours, with all of the breaks and pauses cut out.

Our landing page (currently being built) is very well written without being cheesy. We have plenty of calls-to-action, but we don't use all of the silly yellow highlights and fake testimonials. (Yes, I know these techniques work, but our target market would laugh at that method.) We are also a BBB registered company.

That said, I've heard that most high ticket items over $100 need to be sold with two or three steps...capture an email, follow up, and sell.

I've also read that items priced just under $100, let's say $97.00, sell well off of a single landing page. At $97, we are still making a great profit.

At $195.00, our current price, we are making a terrific profit.

BTW, this is a very emotional product; the target buyers are very passionate about the subject matter.

So...what are your thoughts, friends? Keep the price high and make fewer sales, or discount it and try for volume?

You could always try running a sale for a week or two, as a sort of A/B test and see how performance changes. Testing prices can be very helpful in making these sorts of decisions.

Mook,

I think you seem to have a great handle on your target audience (at least it seems so from your desciption), so you might want to look at it from their point of view. Do the consumers think that they can get a benefit out of this product more than they're paying for it?

How are you going to promote this product? Are you going to use Google Adwords? If you are, maybe you could test out both prices for a week each and see which one brings you a better profit margin. Who knows, the loss in volume might be more than made up for by the higher price.

Whatever you decide to do, I wish you luck. Make sure you get back to us with the results!

-Nick

Edit: Looks like we posted at the same time and had the same idea, xportz.

Good advice, friends, thanks.

Yes, I believe a beta test with different price points is key.

We will be using AdWords, but also banner ads in a highly targeted opt-in email newletter that hits our target audience.

Funny thing, economics. Do the target customers find big value in this particular information? Well, only if it's something they can't find through research, which is this case in our seminar. So there's definte value there...it's not regurgitated 'guru-speak', but real, usable info.

Is Aaron Wall's SEO Book worth $79? To me it absolutely was, since I'm new to SEO and new media (made a fortune in the old media.) Could I dig up the info online or by surfing forums? Absolutely, but it would take TIME, and to me, time is big money. So the $79 was money well spent.

Sorry for the dissertation..I just find the marketing of information a fascinating game.

Will advise once the beta runs.

Thanks again- MookieMookington
