I just started blogging and trying to make profit (0 so far )

I have my website (please check signature) [keiichimcguire dot com] which I initially made as a personal site to post of whatever offerings I have.
I'm an engineering grad student and I want to make profit in order to help pay for tuition, and I am a web junkie so it makes sense

The contents I have been putting up online is related to technology (lots of linux stuff lately, lol), but I feel like I can generate original content couple times a week.

But I wanted to get advice on how my website is currently, and if I should add more (as for ads, etc...), and what I can do to raise my earnings.

Also, I just got Adsense up a few days ago and I'm not sure how it's working... I've gotten a couple of clicks, and there was a percentage (~1.something..%), and it says $0.00. When does it actually turn into a profit??

Thank you everyone!!

I would use a different ad unit, integrated into the actual copy of the posts and using the same color scheme as the body of the page.

I would remove all the references to "blog", including where you have the blog hosted at the moment (/blogs). This will stop all those low-paying low-CTR blog ads from coming up in adsense.

I would make one content theme for the blog. Writing about linux and engineering and consumer electronics and music is just too wide of an area to try and cover unless you're Slashdot.

since i'm an absolute beginner i'm going to ask a bunch of questions

I'm not sure as how to add in the ads in every post. I'm using wordpress. Would I have to tap into the php script that displays a single post and put the ad script in there?

I don't quite get what you mean here... is it that i should have it go to keiichimcguire.com/blog instead of keiichimcguire.com?

i have too many interests... perhaps i can just set up a personal blog (school / engineering) and get a better niche for my profit making.

any other ideas?

My initial goal is to get around 3~400/month to pay my loan interest and insurances... then from there it'll be all profit and i can start paying off unneeded loans!

Do some research on SEO, you need a central theme for your blog/site that people are interested in, use the google square adsense block under topic posts, shouldnt look like an ad.

You can't expect to make a large profit after just a few days just keep building your blog up and you can expect better returns in the future

I would integrate your ads into the content better and maybe slap some vertical link units on the left side bar. That will generate better CTR for you, hopefully. You can't just add advertisements and expect to make money right away.

You've only been at this for a few days so you have to find out what works for your website and what doesn't.

Good luck with it though.
