Are any of you guys making significant revenue from proxy sites?

I'm considering making one since school is starting up again soon, but I'm not 100% on how I would monetize it other an AdSense block on the top of each page..

What would you reccomend?

Hi,
Not sure if it’s significant but I currently make around $100 per month from adsense alone from each of my proxy sites. Actually more like $80 spend around $20 on advertising. The biggest advantage is they do not require any of my time to run and don’t cost much to setup.

PHProxy uses a ton of BW but less resources than CGI. So your host willprobably allow PHP, but may not alow CGI.

I thought I heard that PHProxy used a lot of resoureces too (it did for me).

Also, proxies are expensive to maintain, lots of bandwidth and server load.

IMHO, most proxy sites are crap anyway. On the rare occassion that I need a proxy, I usually plug an IP address right into the connection settings on my browser. And there's only one site I use to find these IPs. Hint hint.

Tell me how you figure this is free to start? Aside from buying a domain, buying the script (i'm assuming it's not free), buying the server space (dedicated if you're planning for high traffic)... plus the opportunity cost of putting it all together, doing the design and advertising it.

Yeah, I was actually refering to server expenses. You can't run it off a shared hosting account....

both of the scripts are free, designs for proxies don't have to be fancy - most people can just do it themselves no problem. Advertising is really easy, just post around on some forums. Of course there are still domain and hosting costs, and obivously it's not the best way to go starting a site and not buying anything for it. Also for hosting, only a stupid shared host will allow proxies, but you can host them on VPSes, which are still much cheaper than a full server.

Nice prices. But:

Guaranteed RAM: 64 MB

LOL

That's definatly NOT enough. I'd say that 512MB is the ABSOLUTE minimum for a proxy site.

I see proxy sites for sale all the time with revenue, but they are extremely resource hungry.

Aside from forums, where else do you advertise?
