I'll have one day of really high traffic...how do I monetize it?

I've got a popular site (who's name will go unmentioned) and in the coming days I'll have guaranteed thousands of people to a specific area on the site (where or what or how is irrelevant...so please don't ask).

What I'd like to know is how can I best monetize this sudden increase in traffic in this one area. Do I just use adsense? I don't want to put some huge leaderboard ad. Is there a certain type of text link that might work well?

Any suggestions?

How about a few CPM ads?

its hard to know without knowing the target audience or what type of page the section in question is. Is it content based? I would stick in as much as possible as blended as possible. Get adsense in there beside pictures, links to affiliate deals.

CPM wouldn't work as the page is basically just a huge bit of AJAX...so not many impressions.

Target audience are computer/technology users.

It is a chat event for a large conference.

Shpigford,
I know this isn't exactly what you are asking for, but awhile back I threw together a list of ways to keep visitors from a one day traffic boost.

Since I haven't made the 15 posts necessary to post the URL, you'll have to check out jasonunger.com, click on the Web category in the sidebar, and scroll down to 10 Tips to Keep Visitors from a Digg, del.icio.us, Slashdot Traffic Boost.

Obviously, this isn't monetizing, but keeping any of those visitors who come to your site around for longer than that one day is great.

Hope those tips help some.

I'm not as experienced on this topic as a lot of others are on here, but the first thing that came to mind, was if you could try and capture a bunch of their email addresses, so you could later market information products to them, either your own products or other affiliate products. The idea being that you can profit off of them more in the long run, than on one single day, where they may be very focused on the event, and not so willing to click on ads.

If you could somehow drive them to a squeeze page, and capture perhaps questions they still have after the conference, and then deliver informational products to your new emaillist based on the most common questions.

The promise of a free post-conference "special report" on some relevant topic, to get them to sign up with you (and capture their emails) might go a long way toward building a nice size list from all your expected one-day traffic.

you could try and get visitors to sign up for an opt in newsletter and sell stuff to them at a future date
