I once had my site down for 4 days and put a donation button on that page, it was viewed over 10.000 times, and about an hour before it was put back online I suddenly got a 10$ donation :-D
Off course, that's nothing compared to what site usually makes a day, but I still was happy someone wanted to support the site :-D

Personally, I have never had a 'non-profit' site that could actually constitute for having one of these buttons. If you have ads, you should get enough money off that to pay your hosting and domain bills and hopefully a little extra.

I take 15% of all earnings I recieve from the internet and donate them once a month to at least 3 organizations that I view can use my donations to help someone or something in a way I see fit.

By all means, if you have a worthy cause that I should donate too PM me or post here and I will look into them and see if I like what they do to help whatever.

I had a donation button on one of my forums, and the site was a big one with bills and little income, but I got very small sums, never enough to cover the bills. Now I have ads on the site and a subscription which gives real value for money. The text on the subscription button now reads 'help us grow'. Much much much better results.

I never donated anything so far to anyone since I was always in a loss. But I am now in the plus for current months, and once I cover the old losses, I plan to start giving some money to all the people whose hard work helped me reach where I am - apache, php, linux, freeBSD and many other open source/free software. Many of the websites for these software have a donate button, and I always felt guilty for not clicking on it.

I agree with the self help comment. The only person I think who gets a significant income from donations that I can think of is StevePavlina.com.

"Adsense is my biggest single source of income, but some of the others do pretty well too. Every stream generates more than $100/month.

My second biggest income stream is actually donations. My average donation is about $10, and I’ve received a number of $100 donations too. It only took me about an hour to set this up via PayPal. So even if your content is free like mine, give your visitors a means to voluntarily contribute if they wish. It’s win-win. I’m very grateful for the visitor support. It’s a nice form of feedback too, since I notice that certain articles produced a surge in donations — this tells me I’m hitting the mark and giving people genuine value."

So if your site is just a bunch of free info, why not?

My 2 cents

I am going to put up a 'donate' and recieve exclusive content soon on my site as a test.

To be honest this will be the first test to see how much a specific group of visitors will pay for rare content made just for them (it is a large underfed community), from there I will test other pricings but it will be interesting to see how much over the $1 min that comes in.

I have made a bit of money off of donations. Not much but a bit.

I have to say that we offer a product out of the donations, so it's kind of a grey zone between sales and donations (the product is free but you can have an "upgraded" version for a $1 donation or more).

And, before you ask, it's an ebook.

If you have ads, it's bad form to ask for donations, IMHO.
