Have you ever made money from one of those PayPal donation buttons?

Unless you are offering something very unique on your site I doubt these donation buttons will achieve much.

On one of my sites, I offer public domain out of print books for download for a very specific niche. I don't run ads on this site because I want to give the impression of an impartial resource site. In this instance, the donation button does very well for me.

Any other site I would run contextual ads.

Does anyone else have experience with this? I just put up a donation button on my site and I'm wondering if it will work.

I haven't made a single dime from donations (and I've tried it for couple of months) - but I have had nice success with affiliates, product and services sales.

I presume donation type of things work best if the resources you offer are aimed for 'living happy life', 'self-help' or on similar subjects.

Before trying it, I think that you should ask: Who will donate and why.

My affiliate teacher raised more than $10000 last year. He is a doctor, and he was running a Blogathon for kids with health problem.

This year he already have more than $4000.

It really depend on the subject, and your audience.

I had a donation link on my ROM site (when it was up). I probably made $10.00 during 10 months or so.

Rather than doing the donation game, I try to build it around a Premium Membership and offer true value for their subscription ( recurring payment ).

I could be alone in this, but I actually would feel kind of bad accepting donations on a site where I was turning a profit. A donation box, atleast to me, carries connotations of "non-profit" or operating at a loss... I don't think it's WRONG or anything but for my own forum sites in particular, I haven't done it.

Yeah, the word "donate" puts the whole thing off doesn't it? They should label it: "Give me pocket change" or something.

I haven't made anything from my donate button, but I'm leaving it there just in case. I don't have a problem with people asking for donations and I can spare a few pixels. I don't expect anyone to ever click it but you never know...

I would follow Lee's advice and offer them something in return and not just beg for money. It will definately have a better effect.

Look at my teacher's blog:

The Heart Kids Blogathon:

http://www.HeartKidsBlogathon.info

http://www.EzineMarketingCenter.com/blog/

you must have a theme, something worth it, otherwise it will not work.

I think that people must feel that their donation is useful.
