I have a potential client who can only pay me via bank transfer or credit card.

I offered to receive via check or paypal, but they can't do that for some reason.

What do you recommend my course of action to accept payment?

Don't you need to have a merchant?

Yup, you need to have a merchant account, and only that. You don' need phpcoin or any other billing software for just one person. 2checkout.com is the most popular and to my knowledge the cheapest, but there is also Worldpay.com!

Unfortunately Steve, you are partialy wrong. Paypal supports only a fraction of countries, and ignores the rest. For example, I'm from Croatia and can't pay via CC to Paypal...

So lets hate Paypal together . It's nice to see some "local" people on this forum. Lee should be proud!
