Well i dont know if this is old but, i asked google adsense if it was ok with their terms to put images next to adds and here was their reply:

Code:
To clarify, publishers should not place images next to ads if an average
user might reasonably think that the images are associated with individual
advertisements. On arcade games sites, for instance, this means that
images should almost never be placed alongside individual ads, as it may
result in user confusion and inadvertent ad clicks.

The presence of borders alone does not ensure that users will be able to
distinguish ads from content if misleading images are placed alongside the
ads.
Hope this helps site owners and arcade owners.

As opposed to the very serious black tie arcade sites.

Icons are different from images; icons are much smaller and less revealing then lets say, a screenshot of a game. It would not matter from site to site; your not allowed to post images next ads..period.

I have small 60*60 icons nex to to my ads, and they're placed under 'Latest Games' which clearly in the TOS says this is banned. The ad looks pretty much exactly like content, the Ads By Goooogle looks like the Category name, so it has a big CTR, yet, AdSense approved it. I think it just matters you answears the email

If the images don't look like normal contest it's fine. If you're using the same images for content and ads (possibly the same size and positioning) I wouldn't be surprised if they asked you to remove them.
