I have over 15,000 photos that I took stored on my hard drive. While most of them are not stock-worthy, I know that there would probably be an upward of 10 photos that are at least decent. I'm halfway in the process of signing up for ShutterStock but then I started reading threads about them on other forums.

Basically what the dilema is, is that there are other professional sites that will sell your photos for much more money, and with stricter licences. Instead of making $0.25 per download, I could be making over $50.00. However, right now they are just on my hard drive doing nothing.

I don't plan to make a living out of this, as I am in no way a professional photographer, but I just want to have a somewhat steady income (even if it is small).

Does anyone have any experiences with stock photo sites or suggestions on what I should do?

You are probably best off going with istockphoto, shutterstockor similiar. Did you mean only 10 out of 15,000 photos are decent? Or was that a typo? 10 photos is not much of a portfolio... most stock companies will not be interested.

If you meant you have 100, or 1000 decent pics and you want to sell them through a larger agency, you should also be aware that size is very important. I was offered a job by Hemera/Ablestock a few years ago, and they wanted my camera to be a minimum 10mp.

Either way, good luck

Yes, have at least a decent amount of stock photo's to start out the site and see how it goes from there. If you seem to be making progress, keep adding more stocks. If business is really booming, maybe you can hire a few professional photographers and see what happens then.

I have read an article of an amateur photographer - he makes 20.00$ a month from this type of sites. If still interested, here is a good list of those websites:

I doubt there is much money in selling a few photos you took.

I've seen pix for big prices and it makes me think they're overblown. They weren't all THAT spectacular, so $45 for one and $75 for another was definitely not worth it. I can't even say lower cost would be better. I'd hate to put my time into something for pocket change.
