When I began seeing sticky traffic, I knew I was on the right track. I'd buy an ad in a newsletter, gain a burst of traffic from the ad, and a week later my daily uniques average would still be higher. This applies to a content site (humor, in my case), but wouldn't be what you would necessarily expect for a non-content site.

And obviously, the more money you make, the more "successful" your site is doing. That usually comes along with the traffic.

I really began feeling I was on the right track when earnings steadily were on the rise AND when I would spend time learning, then incorporating changes from the things I learned, and seeing income rise. It was amazing!

I first learned I was on the right track when the crappy VC fund/Internet Incubator company I worked for imploded and I started doing webmaster work fulltime. I didn't experience a drop in income... that's how I learned I was "on the right track."

Speaking of 'tracks'--tracks aka traffic sources change almost yearly. So, make sure you're diversified.

When I saw that my traffic hit around 15-20% returning visitor was one indication that I knew I was satisfying my market, but that needs to be measured against income for being on the right track earnings wise.

When I could tweak my site and get an extra $100 in a day.
When I received links for free
When I was featured on large sites and quoted

Ultimately, when I told my wife to resign, yep that is when I realised I was on track with my earning strategy.

I am a bit atypical.

When I saw the first days earnings of 54 cents from AdSense, I immediately calculated the level of effort necessary to make $200/day and I knew I was on the right track with my earning strategy. I've never looked back.

My Double Opt In List tells me that im doing well..

I put in marketing efforts to generate 3 leads a day which I know that when combined with
the CTC autoresponder follow up messages translates into an income.

Marketing Efforts are mainly PPC, and Article Marketing.

For me its depending on the ratio of conversion with the traffic that I am generating. If I see that I have 10,000 visitors in my site a month, I should be expecting at least 1% conversion for my content related advertisement. Then I know that I am still on the average side of statistics.

When I saw my first check from one of my affiliate programs, I realized I could repeat that again and again. When I received my second check a week after I told myself you are on the right track boy! Weekly check(s) is a normal event now.

I knew I was right on track when I was too busy one month to work on my sites, yet my earnings and traffic were going up with absolutely no work.
