Is it true that if you have duplicated content, adsense will smartprice you? I was thinking of using some articles from wikipedia.

If you're just copying the articles to slap adsense all over them, then probably. Also, I think the smart pricing only applies if your adwords link directly to the duplicate pages.

I do not believe that AdSense will penalize you for duplicate content, but Google certainly will. I have burned a couple of domains with duplicate content. I would recommend against it. (I was copying my own content.)

Also, be careful to comply with Wikipedia's copyright.

As far as I know, there are duplicate content filters, but not a penalty.

You simply get filtered from the results with copied content.

Will, did you try having unique (self-written) content on those domains for several months before dumping them?

Always go for the original and never for the duplicate. Duplicate content is a mistake. Search engines do not favor duplicate content at all. Yes I know it's tempting to just go ahead and copy paste the matter or content but it can have sever impacts on your website ranking. You could also be an easy victim to get your site banned or penalized by search engines. Creating new content enhances your knowledge and creativity

That's what I thought, until one of my domains went over 18 months with no PR. (It should be PR4) (Oh, it also gets no Google traffic)

It's only sin was duplicate content.

I still have the domains, so I can do more testing. I just closed down two more domains this morning, in order to collapse their content onto other domains with more mojo.

Well, perhaps your case was so obvious that Google didn't need to ponder much

I have lately seen two sites with the same content that rank pretty well, so it must be their trust (links from established websites) that keeps them up.

If you PM me the domains with duplicate content, I'll look at them and see if there's anything wrong with them.

PR4 is fairly easy to get with a few hundred links, I suspect.

I have had other domains with duplicate content where the two domains would trade SERPS. One day one site would be on page one, the next day the other site would be on page one. It was bizarrely random.

I have used duplicate content on one of my sites. The content came from article directories.

Up to this point my site had unique content. I added the duplicate content and waited.

Google just ignored the duplicate articles I had added to the site.

My site is was a PR4, since adding the duplicate it has gone down to PR1.

I think this is certainly a case of Google punishing the site for using duplicate content.

At the end of the day I was experimenting (being lazy) so I have learned my lesson.

Duplicate content will get you nowhere, with Google anyway. Creating unique content is hard work but it pays off in the long run.

google almost considers every webmaster bad until you prove them you are not bad. i haven't heard about duplicate filter issues with adsense, but i know it's an issue with search results. for example, they (google) considered site . com and www . site . com as duplicate content on some sites and would actually penalize them. they released what was labeled 'big daddy' which was supposed to combat that, but they seem to have more problems than any other engine. it just sucks because they send the most traffic.
