I have a young forum (almost 2 months since launch). I have 250 members and an avg of 60 uniques per day. I know these are low numbers but I was wondering how many unique visitors I should aim for to be making 1000$ a month. Also, just to clarify, you only get paid for adsense when people click on the ads right? Is there any type of advertisement that you get paid per unique visitors (ie. how many people view that ad).

I know of a forum with 60,000 members, 4000+ posts per day, etc...and they get around $3000 per month from AdSense (and much more from other sources). So based on those numbers, you'll need about 20,000 members to get your $1000. inch:

Just kidding there...mostly. There are a lot of factors involved -- the topic of the forum, quality of the posts, how you've implemented AdSense, etc.

The other thing you were asking about is CPM advertising (CPM = Cost Per 1000 impressions). There are a number of different CPM networks around.... just google "CPM networks" and you'll find more info. You'll likely get less than $1 CPM for a forum site.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'll have to be smart about it.

Lee doesn't post here much...kinda lame when you consider the whole point of this site was to help teach people how to build communities and make money online.

Tyler Cruz (http://www.tylercruz.com) has made a good amount of money from forums of different types. I suggest checking out his blog first.

I'm a big promoter of TLA (http://www.text-link-ads.com). Depending on your Google Page Rank and Alexa Rank, you may be able to get from $100 - 200 with 0 clicks needed.

i'm a new girl here, but interesting reading. thought i would start my chime in here. i think your forum has to be a very popular place and maybe offer more than just the forum, maybe pages of info about the subject too, to really be of value. i run a dating site and do some advertising and forums usually aren't a good target for me unless it's a a really popular forum. even then, if it's a banner/impression type offer, it's a tough buy because with as many hits as one person has, impressions can run fast.

i agree with geiger about selling links if you have some site ranking or even look into some sort of in-text ads (ie intellitxt). my personal opinion of adsense is crap. they close people's accounts down faster than they open them and don't pay. i read about it everywhere and have been a victim.

good luck though!

Well its a forum for university students. People seem to love it but I have some unexpected competition from facebook so I am going to have to adapt and offer something which they don't (open discussion??). My goal is spend a year building and growing the forum and getting enough members to eventually make money from banner ads and adsense.

I have grown from 0 to 270 members in almost 2 months. This may not seem like much compared to other forums but I do a majority of my marketing on campus in physical form such as flyers. Hopefully the growth will be exponential when the word of mouth kicks in which is why I was looking for a number to aim for. Thanks for the replies
