I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

Why not just sign up for some affiliate networks and skip the middle man? (ie adsense).

I don't get it.

Because many websites don't earn anything at all with affiliate networks.

Most people are lazy and don't take the time to find suitable affiliate programs.

Not every website attracts potential buyers, a click on an ad doesn't have to be related to a buy request.

Show me one of your sites and I'll show you an affiliate program that makes you more.

Well when it's about gaming, especially MMOs like World of Warcraft I wasn't able to find any good affiliate program for such stuff yet.. AdSense is best for it..

The affiliate programs at the WoW gold selling sites will make you more than Adsense. If you don't want these, the strategy guide sellers pay commission of around $15.

Not every kind of visitor looks for something to buy. I assume WoW's population contains pretty much kids, they look for free content and the best way to monetize free content is to use AdSense.

What do you think is being advertised on Adsense?

Stuff to buy?

Are they clicking on the ads?

WebMasterWorld (WMW) is managed so insanely that I just can't stand to go there. I can't wait for Brett to shut it down completely, or perhaps just sell it off to someone who could manage it more reasonably.

Everyone will have their own reasons and that's perfectly fine IMO. But I don't know what you mean by "skip the middleman" with affiliate networks. Naturally, they too take a cut out of the profits. The only way to cut out the middleman is to sell your own products/services. Personally, our firm does all three. We use Adsense, have affiliate networks and sell our own products as well. After years of testing different elements that combination has proven to be the most effective for us.

I use AdSense for several reasons:
  • Dead simple to implement, track, and customize
  • 25 day EFT payouts
  • No time spent managing multiple affiliates on multiple
  • Monetizes traffic that doesn't buy
  • Little experience with affiliates

Then why not just skip the affiliates and sell your own products? Probably because acquiring and managing a bunch of products is unwieldy and unrealistic for a diverse network of sites. Much like managing a bunch of affiliates can be unwieldy and unrealistic for a diverse network of sites.

AdSense saves me time and earns. It is also secondary income for me. Furthermore, I'm not aware of any affiliates that meet my requirements and have little time to invest in research.

I think that you should use a humble application of both adsense and aff products.. I'm still trying to find the balance.. :-)
