The really big sites sell advertising direct and avoid sharing their ad revenue with the ad networks.

Does anyone have useful experience with this? I would like to do this, but I don't know much about it. I am pretty much just an AdSense whore.

I've written up a brief blurb titled Advertising on The Tech FAQ, but have not promoted it in any way.

Can I get some advice from someone who has been down this path?

You don't have to be a huge site to sell your own advertising. Maybe I misunderstood what you meant.

Once you have your rates in place, you go out and sell your advertising. Make contacts and sell. Figure out what your target is and approach them.
