I've been doing so much so wrong for so long.
I've learned more in my one week on EF than I have in years I think.
One thing I learned is that there are freelance coders in India, Asia etc that will create sites etc by bid.

I'm thinking of starting a myspace layout type of site and am receiving bids from people who will build it.

So my question is this: All these myspace graphic sites - Are they just grabbing images from anywhere? Some of them have huge inventories of myspace layouts and images. Where do they get them? I know some are licensed but there are so many that have crappy images that say "Happy Hump Day". Is there a way to grab these en mass or is it hunting them down one at a time?

You can have the freelancers in india create them for you or you can create them yourself. How each individual site does it is not something I can offer insight into, but I would be wary of using images without permission.

Or you can buy one of the tons of myspace scripts out there and get them that way.

The wget command is pretty nice too

That's my point. I will spend (waste is more like it) too much time while I try to figure out a good design. My experience is with hand coding basic html. I'll be at it forever.
As for images, I'm aware that there are issues with copyright but some are so basic and lame in concept....

Which I'd never even heard of. But why can't I get it to run now that I downloaded it?

It's command line. You have to run it from DOS if you're on Windows.

My advice is to get someone to make you a nice design and have all unique content. The turnkey script thing is dead, I doubt you would be very successful with that kind of thing.

I don't want to sound facetious but you have one yourself. Does it make you any money?
And while I'm obviously late getting into this (typical) what does someone looking for stupid glitter graphics care if the site is unique or not?

A lot of myspace sites, including some of the highest traffic ones, boast about having 1000s of layouts, but they are just stolen using a layoutstealer, all half or completely broken. It's sad really.

Is there much money to be made with MySpace layouts any
more? Has anyone moved onto the other social networking
sites like FaceBook and er.. FaceParty?

I've always thought MySpace was a bit silly, but when I saw
Michael Fortin's page (which had a *really* nice layout), I
almost changed my mind.

Plus, several big name marketers have MySpace pages which
they recommend for setting up JVs - so perhaps it's not all that
bad.

To MikeB: I'd recommend starting out in a niche that isn't so
heavily saturated. There are tons and tons of MySpace sites,
why not start something new?

If you can get traffic to your site there is still money in it, you just need more traffic than with most other types of sites.

I am struggling with traffic myself...been making extremely slow progress but my continues work with unique layouts and such seem to be paying off at least.

Has anyone tried selling custom templates to MySpace users? There's
a whole bunch of them who'd rather have something unique and would
probably be willing to spend a few dollars having something built for
them. And it would probably pay more than PPC clicks..

Or even some type of tool that allows them to customize and create the code to do it themselves. Now, that would get traffic.

Two simple facts:

1. If MySpace were a country it would be one of the largest (11th)
2. MySpace is cheap and cheerful

If you can strike a chord with even a medium sized demographic using MySpace then you will make a lot of money quickly, but remember that because MySpace is cheap and cheerful (it doesn't claim to be, and certainly isn't, one of the best designed social sites) you will not make much return by making gloriously sexy layouts that get spoilt by the banner ads and MySpace junk.

Yes, freelancers are good if you do not have much time on your hands. Most of these myspace type sites I would imagin they use turnkey scripts or something alone them lines that come with content already.

A few of the sites may even be grabbing images from anywhere on the web, which is fine to do if you want to get into trouble with copyright infringement laws.

As longs as you know where the images are coming from and if you can get a license, all the better.

Some people in other forums even sell packages of images and things. But then you also have to be careful there as they normally go accrossed the web collecting them thereselves and sell them just to earn a quick buck no matter if they are other peoples own created works or not.
