I offer a free ringtone on a basic website ( normalringtone.co.uk ). It gets about 500 downloads a month, and the pull is that it gets straight to the point, and it's easy to work out.

However, I want to monetize this, without putting up too many restrictions on ease of use. Is there an easy way to do this, beyond putting Google adsense on (which has already been done)?

The AdSense could be made much more effective by redesigning the
site and making it more prominent, as well as blending it with the site
colours.

I think your site could be big - I have had a phone for a couple of
years now that doesn't ring like a normal phone, so I'll be trying to
get your ringtone to work.

So here's my suggestions:

1. Put the AdSense at the top, set the background to white and the
link colour to blue.

2. Add a "tell a friend" and Digg widgets.

3. Get rid of the fancy JavaScript slidy boxes with more info. Set them
in a three column layout instead.

As for monetisation - get an autoresponder and sign people up after they
have downloaded the ringtone, offering them a pack of 5 more or updates
whenever you add more to the site.

Then you can push mobile related products and CPA offers around phones.

You could also have a 2 step process to downloading, with an upsell or
OTO on a subsequent page that offers a larger package of ringtones for a
small fee.

I see on wibbler.com you've got an affiliate link to Jamster. That's exactly
what I meant above about CPA or affiliate programs.

Maybe also have a thankyou page after the download with instructions:

"Next - Click Here To Get More RingTones"

And redirect them to Jamster

Thanks - all great ideas, all implemented on the site! I'm looking for a script that makes the visitor fill in their email address in a form, and then sends the ringtone as an attachment to them. Is there something that does that?

Looks good! Lose the grey border round the ads and make the links the
same blue as the rest of the links on the site. Oh, and put the donation
button next to the Digg button - make it obvious.

For doing the email part, check out AWeber.com. They offer a cheap
service to let you manage mailing lists and autoresponders. You can set
up a one message job that sends out the ringtone easily enough.

You can consider creating a forum on mobile ringtones and even include other facilities like wallpaper, theme etc. if you feel so. Many are now going for the forum way to generate traffic and money too.
