What types of sites make money

I'm finally beginning to put into practice the stuff i've been reading for the past 6 or so months and have a question for all of you experienced earners out there.

If you were looking to create a small group (4 to 5) of sites that required little/no maintenance but were known to be sites that could grow traffic and income what would they be?

I'm stuck thinking arcades, proxies, and myspace "resource" sites. I know there must be more types but i'm just beginning to seriously consider putting some significant amounts of money and time into this.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Pick something that interest you and focus on that.

It's a lot of trial and error. The only thing that will keep you from making money... is contemplating on how to make money! You just gotta go for it and take the chance and hope it turns out. If not, then count your losses and move on to something new.

Ive come to notice that time goes by fast on-line.
You really gotta jump into certain niches as quickly as you can. The faster you do that, the bigger advantage you have against everyone else.

Ok let me rephrase this:

If you had a budget of $400-500 to start a new site or buy an established one for the hopes of turning it into an even bigger money maker, what do you do and how do you do it?

You get traffic. Period. I know that is simplistic but if you are referring to a site making money from typical rev sources, i.e. adsense, cpa, cpm etc, it requires traffic. The more you get, the more you make.

Keep in mind that if you are buying an established site for the kind of dollars you mention, your monthly income at the start will be almost nothing. My experience on places like sitepoint etc is that if someone is selling a site for 500 bucks, there monthly income is about 20 bucks.

I think this is the best advice you can get - pick something that you are going to enjoy - especially if it is the first site that you are doing.

The other option is to pick something that you want to learn more about. You will have a lot more success if you have some level of interest in your site (at least initially).

One of the biggest mistakes new Web site publishers make is they assume that their topic is going to make them money.

If your plan is to use Adsense, think about the advertisers: how badly do they want to acquire your users? Will your users spend money with the advertisers?

If your answers aren't "badly" and "yes" -- rethink your topic.

Hi,

I'll go against the grain here and say avoid the "pick something you like and focus on that" type advice. Following this strategy is like throwing a dart blindfolded. What if whatever it is "that you like" doesn't appeal to others? You'll have wasted all this time and effort on a site which might or might not make money.

It would be a lot wiser to spend most of your time finding an hungry crowd and give them what they want. Fortunately, on the internet, underserved markets abound. The real work involves finding such markets.

Good luck,
Dylan

Entertainment may grow without doing much updating, but then you will not earn much from these.

You could have forums as most of the content will be user contributed, but then you have to moderate them every day and also you don't earn much from this.

The best thing to do is to chose a niche that you are interested in.

On the money. Pick a topic with traffic that can be monetized. Without traffic or non paying traffic you have yourself a hobby site.

is BlueHat SEO. Definetly worth a read, and will probably inspire some new project that is going to take up some of your valuable time.

Have you researched the niche you're looking into attacking or are you going on "gut feeling?" Both have a place but make sure you do your homework. Ultimately, be prepared to reap the consequences of the decision you make however uneducated it may be. Sometimes those are the ones that work out for the best as people's online behavior is known to be varied and not easily predictable.

I done a little research on my niche, but I also do it because I enjoy this niche. As time has gone by my niche has grown further onto me.

If your not in a desperate rush for cash, start anything up. If it's your first site, just get it going. Look for something atleast "fairly" popular and run with it. Take all the techniques you have learned and put them together. If it doesn't make money within a few months, hop on another idea.. There's going to be trial and error, no matter waht you try to accomplish.

Even though the myspace resource niche is heavily populated, a bulk of the sites are cheap, thrown together scripts that were purchased. After owning a myspace resource site for 2 years, I sold it,and started back over in January. Purchased hosting, a domain, a script to build off of and some generators, which most likely fit within $500 start up. From there, link exchanged, bulletins on myspace and SEO got me running again, as well as prior experience. 6 months later, I'm doing great again..

If you work hard enough and put enough time, you can accomplish anything.

"The distance is nothing; it is only the first step that is difficult.”

Get started already.
