why not ... banners, google ADS ...the most dificult thing is promote your forum and make it really popular.

yup making money from your forum relies on having traffic. But you basically make money from google ads, selling ad space, affiliate marketing, and even charging a membership fee for premium accounts.

Forums have the lowest CTRs out of any site for advertisements, so it can get kind of complicated.
