If you have a website , put the products you want to sell on the left and others like articles on the right because humans seems to read things on the left first for example when u read a book or a newspaper you will read on the left first.
Hope this helps.

I think the navigation menu should be in right side as it was before some website designers started to put it to left in 1997. Reading from left and navigating with right hand on right side was most convinient for humans.

AdSense definitely goes well on the left and top.

I would say adsense on the left is a good idea but putting products and affilaite links there might give people the wrong impression when they get to your site.

They may see those and just assume your site is trying to sell something rather than providing content.

I agree that people expect the navigation menu to be on the left.

I'm frustrated by the lack of ads in different sizes from affiliate companies. So many of them just provide common rectangle banners. What about the sides? Need tall ones, too!

Adsense does a little better for me on the right hand side, but not by much. Just make sure your adsense in near your navigation.

While most people do read and look from left to right, it's going to depend on other things too, such as pay layout, colors, images ,etc.

I think that the OP's statement is entirely too generic. There is no one guideline like this that should drive your product or advertisement placement. Each site is unique, and if you can draw attention to the things that you want your readers to pay attention to, you'll be successful. That's regardless of where it's placed.

nickhorn is right.

There is no silver bullet that every site can use to earn the best from programs such as adsense and affiliates.

Every site is unique and has to use the standard trial and error method to obtain their top earning potential.

While many people do read from left-to-right, there are languages like Arabic and Hebrew that are the opposite. However, for most western languages, the upper left is a natural starting point. That said, it really is site specific as Nick mentioned. If you study design at all, you'll learn how to draw the eye to your desired location. You can use a lot of subtle techniques like contrast in size or color, whitespace, images, font, or motion (be careful with motion). Rather than just blindly following someone's advice, the best thing you can do is test on your site to see what works with your design. A/B and multivariate testing will help you optimize the conversion rate of your site, no matter if you are just serving ads or trying to sell products.

I have to agree on that. Based on theory, left sided Ads would be better. Based on Application, the right sided ads pay better. All humans that use the computer write first on the top left. Everybody would adjust and see the content first on it. However in the case of Adsense Ads, it will tell a different story. As most of the time, people that surf the internet get Ad-blinded eventually, so placing it on the opposite corner will do the trick.

From this, i can say that experience is still the best answer for experimenting on Ad Placement.
