I have owned a domain for about 5 years but have mainly been using it just for my portfolio etc and never got around to developing it, recently I have compiled and am currently writing a bunch of tutorials on using Autodesk 3D Studio Max (if the site is any success i plan on doing some digital painting tutorials in photoshop also on another site). From my perspective I have some very good free content as I took what I would have loved to know when I first started and built tutorials that are not covered by other sites.

My main questions are to make money from my content online would it be better to place ads from such places as google adsense in the content or is there a better option? Personally when I am browsing the internet my mind automatically filters out the ads even if they are disguised I can tell whats garbage and whats worth my time is every person like this or does it just come with experience from looking at websites (am i overestimating the average person)?

It really depends. Would you like to create you revenue from just adsense, and the like, or from an actual paid income. What I mean is, you could either offer your content for free, and put up adsense, or find some way of linking both revenue and your content. Create some kind of business. Something that would revolve around what you're trying to do. I'm sure one is easier than the other, however, I personally, like the second option better.

Adsense, adbrite, and the like, are great ways to earn revenue, however they cannot compare to actual income your website may bring in directly.

Maybe you could start a database collection of tutorials. Charge for the reading. Give users a great summary( not revealing everything), grab their attention, and some are likely to pay.

What I'm really getting at is that you DO have another option.

thanks for the quick reply, i get what your saying and do have an idea of how to implement it. I could offer the standard tutorials in basic html with images and ads and charge for example the tutorial in PDF format without ads, the completed 3D model to look at once the user downloads it for reference and other items which would be hard to explain if you don't know the program.

My only concern with this is say i write a tutorial on how to model for example a Boeing 747, won't i be infringing copyright laws? If i stuck to just ads it is "safer" however if i charge for the tutorial I will probably be infringing copyrights.

Be careful with ads next to your content. Just a few months ago, Google made a policy announcement about how you can display your ads.
