Obviously not on adsense so much, but generally: text ads can often be less intrusive, and therefore get higher conversions and thus more $$$.
Much of the time people aren't using text ads to their full potential and therefore they may well have conversions the same as banners - the latter are always extraneous to the meat of the text you're reading, whereas clever text advert users will put text in places where people treat it as prime content.
Then on the contrary, you get these people who highlight words in your content and turn them into ads. Those have low pay, low clickthru, high annoyance value.
A good rule of thumb, in life as well as online advertising, is to try everything and find out what works for you and what doesn't, then go after what works for you, ignore what doesn't, and find that life is usually a compromise where you get some of one and a bit of another and somehow it all mixes together in a good way.
You say you are brand new, and on adwords - but adwords is for buying not selling ads, so you mean adsense, yeah? In which case, go over to the affiliate programmes forum on this site and peruse some of the networks mentioned there. You can make a lot of money by targeting the ads yourself (whereas adsense will target everything for you). And you can have the choice of many many text ads (or indeed banners) which you can hand pick to work best for your site.
Is a biscuit better tasting when it's from a packet from a shelf from a production line (like google's adsense ads) or when it's home made by grandma? (picking the ads yourself, and putting it on your site in just the right way)
