I am brand new to the internet marketing arena and I am looking for any ideas and feedback you all can give. A friend of mine is a programmer/developer and he has developed an app that plays videos. He created it originally for a local film school but he retains the rights to the code or script or whatever you call it. He has asked me to help him see if we can’t use it in some other way to make money. The features of the app are:
-It can be branded to a company name or product
-Each video comes with a screen shot and brief description
-Each video can be rated by viewers
-There is a button for feeds, Twitter, RSS, whatever
-There is a button for people to register their email, etc...
-There is a button to go to a website
-There is an “about us” button
-He is planning on adding a ‘search” button and “categories” button for the videos
-It works on the iphone and Android phones
-The app is controlled by an admin website
I’m not really sure there is much of a market for this app since you can upload a video to YouTube or other video sites and someone can watch it on their smartphone for free. I am an outside sales rep by trade so the only ways I have thought of how to use this would be to sell it to a company that would have a use for such an app. But unfortunately I haven’t thought of any types of companies that would need a mobile video app. My friend said we could make the app very niche specific and then have in video ads like YouTube. That may work but I hate it when I have to watch an ad before wathcing a video, doesn't everybody? Any ideas on ways to monetize this app would be greatly appreciated. All other comments or criticisms are welcome as well.
