Hello, we are working on a new project and we would like to know what would be the best way to go in terms of profits vs user experience.

The project is a basic social networking site with tons of features, from forum boards, to news articles and so on. It is not just about submit your articles and earn from it.
But we are currently discussing the possibility of making it ad free and earn money in different ways, from members support up to selling goods.

What would you prefer?

Personally I always liked the system of ads on the site but ad free with a paid membership. It gives an incentive to become a member (recurring revenue and traffic) and still allows you to monetize the deadbeats. Best of both worlds.

Point taken. I guess it depends on your audience which option you can take, free membership + paid with extras for example.
Or like linuxquestions did before (or still does I don't know), you can be a sponsor and earn the privilege of been one, but they can do that because of their members.

I personally prefer the Ad free option when loged in.
