Situation:

Got a Website where customers post projects for contractors to bid upon and then complete offline. I would like registration to be free. Not only to attract customers/businesses, but to ultimately earn more money by charging commission on the services performed. Trying to figure out how to monitor how to do so. Should I charge the customer the comission prior to selecting the contractor then have the contractor deduct the commission from his price? I just dont want to get screwed out of comission by the contractor saying he couldnt get a hold of the customer and could not complete services when in actuality he did but doesnt want to get the commission?

I was thinking about charging a flat rate for the year. I am not sure though. What do you guys think?

I suggest that you do it initially on a monthly basis and go from there.

You make some research in google about other freelancer sites how they are charging.I am not talking about the big sites like freelancer or odesk. But I can recommend the middle freelancer marketplaces where there are amount of people like your site has and I am sure you will get some idea.

I agree with you on that one. You can also compare other prices.

Once your site, you should think about how their firm grip on and further monetizing your website. Diversification is the secret behind monetization. There is no single method is sufficient to generate income. You should practice a combination of various monetization techniques to feed your website with a regular income. Here are some of the best ways to monetize your website and set your income on autopilot.

I think you should opt for charging a flat rate on monthly basis on the contractors, thus not giving them the contact number or the addresses of the customers, I hope that this will make sense.

I think Contractors should pay a specific fee upon registration in your site and the contract should be done online and a minimal percentage of commission should be taken out on the agreed project price.
