DMOZ!!

Hi,
I am stuck with submission to this ODP thing. One of my competitors have already assigned himself editor to the directory submission, and he won't accept my site. Any suggestions/workarounds?
Thanks,
Sam

submit it and forget about, then go do something useful.

Welcome to Dumbass.
Like Chris Hirst said, submit, forget, and move on. There's a myth that somehow Dumbass is the magic bullet to #1 ranking in search engines and how it will send reams upon reams of traffic. Neither is true, nor have they been for some time.

I am sorry to say that Dmoz is no longer the big dawg. I would rather get in the yahoo directory and in the alive directory. Those to are plenty good enough for anything you need dude!

did he actually send you a notification saying that he won't accept you or do you just think that based on a certain amount of time going by. I have had it take upto 6 months to get listed.
If he has sent you notification and you feel that it is unjust and that he is really just trying to keep you out for his own personal reasons, you could send an email to staff at dmoz dot org to let them know.

I think that if directory is quite big one you shouldn't expact quick reaction. Wait little bit and everything will brу fine.

Dmoz is run by a volunteers who moderate particular topics but it can take a while for your submission to get accepted. People seem to be criticizing Dmoz a lot here - personally I like it and it does help in search engine rankings, particularly if you own a regional site in a fairly small category.

That's not true. DMOZ still rules. Being accepted in it and being rejected make HUGE difference in traffic and SERP with Google.

Have you actually had a site listed in DMOZ, yangyang? If you have, look at your traffic logs and see the number of referrals you get from it.
I've got multiple sites listed for both myself and clients in DMOZ and I can give you the exact number of visits all of them get combined.
Ready? Wait for it...waaaaaaaaaaaait fooooooooooor iiiiiiiiiiit....
ZERO.
Nadda. Nil. Zilch. Bupkes.
DMOZ is completely, totally useless from a traffic generation point of view.
As far as the SERP thing goes...sites can rank for hundreds of keywords and phrases without a single DMOZ listing if they do it right.
DMOZ may be the largest directory site out there, but it has a minimal impact at best.

Ok guys,
got the hang. now... see... i can't wait for ever. site has been rejected several times, i have submitted again. now, has anybody tried being an editor? i tried-- its almost like a job application, and got rejected
One Q. If I try any other directory, or try to open a new one, how much of possibility do I have?
Yahoo I am listed on. Since you say dmoz is no good Adam, do you suggest any other directory that i should turn my eye on?
thanks,
sam

"Any unique directory that will bring you traffic". That's the best answer I can give.
Here's an example of one:
www.websavvy.cc
The editors of this directory are about as picky as it gets, and that's a very good thing. If you get into their directory, you've earned it, pure and simple. They're not going to fall for any of the spam tricks either, so if you've got link exchanges or stuffed keywords or cloaking or any of the other BS going on, be prepared to be rejected.
If you submitted multiple times to DMOZ, you shot yourself in the foot. That's a major no-no by their rules and they can claim it's why you were rejected. It may or may not have been the reason, but you can't really challenge it since you just admitted you did that.
I'm not taking their side or anything...I think the site is dinosauric and the editors for the most part have no clue about anything. I'm just explaining that they can drop the "He submitted multiple times and spammed DMOZ" card and you're euchred.

Hi there
It was interesting to hear you got absolutly 0 hits at all from dmoz adam lol as so many peoples seem to think it will get them 100s of hits a day, so many people on so many forums bang on about dmoz, someone mentioned that the data feeds are one of the main benefits, as you can pick up more links via there.
I have to say ive never managed to get a site in dmoz and have given up even trying lol

That's the only directory that's ever asked me if it would be okay for them to link to my site. They didn't ask for anything in return, either; they just thought it was a good site, and including it in the directory would improve their site. So I'd recommend them.
I'd also look for a lesson that applies to other directories, and say look at who they link to across a few different categories you have some interest. See what the overall quality level is.

Yeah, they're good people over at WebSavvy. Doesn't surprise me that they asked nicely first. That's a Deb thing to do...classy.
Something just occurred to me, Cliff...how do you know your submissions were rejected? DMOZ isn't exactly known for communication for the most part.

I never even tried to get into DMOZ. How much can the link really be worth, really? Think of all the millions of sites they link to. Just whoever. And they're so slow, you can get in, sell your domain to some pornographer, and they won't notice

While they are slow, they're links are fairly good and their on page SEO is good as well. I think its worth the 10 mins to submit and then forget about
