A useless idea for a few reasons:

1) Social bookmarking users tend not to convert to customers (something very few people have learned).

2) People who "digg exchange, stumble exchange", whatever, tend to get found out pretty quickly...and when they don't, they ruin it for everyone else.

Depends what your friend means by the best. If he means getting a whole bunch of nofollow links until everybody associates your name with spam, then sure, it's the best.

My Canadian friend said building a site people will actually want to go to is the best way to increase link popularity.

I've heard of your Canadian friend. I hear he's an a**hole, but very wise.

Please tell us more about him.

farishussain: don't believe most of what you're told, regardless of who it comes from. 99.9% of SEO advice is bad. Look at it this way: if it interferes with the end user Internet experience in some way, it's bad advice. In this case, social bookmarking to get your sites noticed interferes with the social bookmarking user experience because it defeats the purpose of organic traffic generated from said sites. This affects people such as Forrest Croce, Seattle photographer extraordinaire, who have something to offer people and that have had their sites bookmarked by at least semi-strangers.

Hi there

Its a shame because these sites are a really good idea, but i think they are destined to fail as people just abuse them, full of spam *sighs* lol, ive even seen people selling diggs on other websites, which is terrible.

usearchme: you're not supposed to predict that. Almost no one will agree with you because Social Bookmarking sites are a scalable and robust solution for the future of e-marketing.

(But just so you know, you're not the only one who has predicted the death of social bookmarking sites. )

of course it won't be a natural peaceful death.

It will be a cold blooded execution at the hands of the spammers and unscrupulous link beggars.

Nobody has any faith in the "this is lousy?" button, on whatever social make-me-lots-of-money service? Actually, I guess the real question is how much faith do the people who use the services for their intended purposes have in their no votes, and how quickly are Digg, Stumble, and the rest of them being spammed?

For the person with a worthless site who buys 500 Diggs to turn their site into a laughing stock and give it a lasting bad reputation ... I'm guessing most of these people don't make the connection? Traffic = quality traffic, like they're one and the same, not worth trying to distinguish?
