I'd say it's about 1 % valuable.
That's not really true. Social media can be very valuable, maybe as much as 25 %, but only if they're used properly. And doing that is something most - but not all - SEO's are incapable of.
Adam and I both discovered Stumble Upon through our web logs.
Have a look at this article called When Does Social Media Marketing Become Spam? Neither of those links are self-promo; they're good examples. Adam built an ... eccentric ... blog. It's funny, there's a lot of very good information, an unusual perspective, and compelling fiction with a character named Peter Petera, wildly popular. You can't find that mix of insight, useful ASP code, and attention-deficit-disorder spam fighter anywhere else on the web. Somehow, amazingly, people read his site, liked it, and used social media to recommend it to others. With no work on his part.
Van Gogh's article is a blue-print on how to use social media effectively, and exactly where the line is drawn. Most people won't follow it, but it's very much worth the read.
