Hi,

Today, after we had completed a training session with our new link team, one of the senior trainees informed them that we would be having a debate on the topic "Link or Content - Which is the boss?"

As we all know and have been hearing that content is the king and link is the secondary aspect as regards to SEO, what would you guys opine on this subject in the modern SEO era. Would you go only with quality content or would you concentrate mainly on link building.

Lets share our experiences through this platform.

Anand

Content. Link building is a waste of time is you have nothing good to link to!

If you can provide some interesting, useful unique content, people will link to your site without you having to bother with blackhat SEO, link farms or link exchanges intended to manipulate PR etc., since this is now against Google's TOS.

Agreed, "CONTENT IS KING"......

I suppose if you just have a blank page with a 2 liner, 1 buy it now link and Absolutely "NO" intentions of the 3R's - Repeat / Referral / Retention - Then a BlackHat Linking Campaign would be the #1 choice.

However in the real business world the 3R's are essential to the long term Growth / Expansionism / Success. Thus Viable organic WhiteHat CONTENT!

I don't think it could be more Obvious - Content #1 - Linking #2 -

Both. I think content comes first because without it even if you do get traffic it won't really matter, but at the same time if you have great content and no one ever sees it what's the point.

The truth is it all happens together. There is no one single aspect of building a successful site that works without the other parts. You don't need to do everything 100% right, but the more things you get right the better chance you have of succeeding.

I think your debate is a complete waste of time, for the reasons Steven just explained.

Good content draws good links to that content. Good links draw good traffic. But in order to get the good links, you have to link to the good content yourself first in some form or fashion.

So you must learn the balance point between the two. This is known as SEO Qi.

I think I just got an Amen from the congregation. It's all about balance like Adam said. No one thing is going to be responsible for your success.

If a tree falls in the forest does it make a sound?

Well that's a philosophical question, but if a website has the greatest content ever produced and there's not a single link pointing to it I know it gets no visitors.

I also know if a million links point to garbage content then you don't have a successful site. Unless of course you're running AdSense.

A better question is: "If a tree falls on George W. Bush and no-one is there, will anyone care?"

Hi,
Content is the boss. The quality content will drag the quality links. If the content is not good ,then who will give the links to you.The title and description should match with your content.Otherwise people discontinued to read yours. If you provide informative and interesting content, then automatically you can get good back links from other good content sites. These good back links automatically drags the good traffic to your site. Therefore first step to increase the traffic and links is made your content rich.

GOOD LUCK

Better think about that. If it happened, Dick Cheney would be president.

Maybe. OK version 2: If George Bush, Dick Cheney and the rest of the republican senior administration were alone in the forest, and a single tree fell on them all, horrifically crushing them, would anyone care?

Hmmm..i found this question a bit philosophical.

I think (and i'm convinced that it will be in the future) that content should be one and most relevant things on sites, but today that is not a case, in my opinion.
I think that strong SEO sites (with large amount of capital invested in) can't compete with small, cool sites (with interesting, unique content), they simply have more visitors...

Since SE methods advancing every day and trying to give priority to more natural content and link building i think that combination of #1 unique quality content (user friendly as possible) and #2 following modern SEO rules will be the winning combination... and all hats will become White
