moving platform - what to do with existing links?

I am moving an existing site over to a new platform. I have the option to install a mod to specify the exact url's for each page. I could also use 301 redirects. If I install the mod, I am at the mercy of the mod provider to update when a new version of the platform i'm using gets released (if i want to upgrade).

I would like to just use 301 redirects for the few links this site has out there, but do not want to be penalized by the search engines. I am also wary of installing that mod (it modifies a lot of the core files).

What would you do?

.Htaccess redirects are far less likely to get punished than many other methods anyway (i.e. meta refreshing or something does get frowned upon).

I doubt Google and other search engines will frown upon .htaccess redirects as I just said, although you may see a fluctuation in search engine ranking for a while until Google updates completely.
