I heard that this site is really useless and that tanking on alexa means absolutely nothing, and i also heard that thats what advertisers use to determine your worth. What are you experiences with alexa?

Is there a real site for determining how you rank on the web?

1) You're right. Alexa rank is based solely on Alexa toolbar usage, which is naturally skewed toward webmasters and those who know how to manipulate it (i.e. those who know how to artificially inflate Alexa rank by visiting their own sites constantly with the toolbar. So it means nothing.

2) The only real measure of traffic and sales comes from internally (i.e. your own site stats). There's nothing that can accurately compare/rank sites in terms of popularity, because there are too many idiots that would try to manipulate that ranking for their own good (see Alexa, Compete to a lesser extent.)

Alexa only becomes accurate once you are in the top 10,000 or so sites. So, if you are less popular than 10,000, you shouldn't take it as the bible, but if you are within the top 10,000, you can use it to your advantage when talking to buyers or advertisers.

If you want to raise your Alexa rank, install their toolbar and visit your site a lot. Have your friends do the same. It's as useful as an out of state check.

I agree - Alexa rank is relatively useless. Google search engine ranking is far more important than this

Alexa is a manipulative system, like everyone mentioned you can install the toolbar and you can bring you site up. Its not a reality measurement. I don't know how these guys survived this long and its the dumbest and lazy system possible.

If you watch carefully it will always have a wrong contact information when compared to Whois information.

Like someone already said Alexa is not very accurate, and the only thing that is almost %100 accurate would be your own stats, for example Google Analytics. High ranked Alexa could be taken like pretty accurate..because it gets very hard to manipulate with toolbar when you need millions of fake clicks

I don't know about you guys, but i get some serious Search Engine traffic only from Google...very little form Yahoo, Msn..etc. So basically only Google rating is worth something

yes you are right
i think alexa is important for some advertising it will help earn some big money
