On my site I have added my own sitemap with just a list of my pages (not many at the minute) with a link to it on the top of the page.

Will this make much of a difference with regards to search engines?

I think that doing this would only make an appreciable difference if it was hard for a search engine to reach your pages e.g. if you had unnavigable links. It's certainly not going to make your pages rank better because you are only giving each page 1 extra link (the one on the sitemap).

I guess this will make some positive effects for your site. I'm sure you know the benefits of creating a site map.

At the minute there is not much content which I hope to add to in the next couple of days and as some of the links are 2 pages deep I thought it might make a slight different but when I try and do a bit of research it is the case of some say it will, some say it wont.

Well i suppose it will get you some benefits on SERP, but you definitely should have from other reasons...like getting around your site..

Anyway you will get use from it...

It should help the search engines index all of your pages. Did you add it to Google and Yahoo? That should speed things up as far as your pages being listed.

Have you looked at other areas of your site that can be improved from an SEO standpoint? There are quite a few areas (such as using specific keywords in your heading tags) that you're missing.

Yes.. having site map would best for your site cause it help robots to crawl your pages.. you made a right thing..

There is a theory that any sub-page deeper than 2 pages may or may-not have index problems. (Just a theory)

Whether this is taking in account if the URL's are SEF or not, I'm not sure.

Unless your pages URL's are not SEF & exceed 2-3 Levels deep, I personally don't see the point in having a site Map.... I mean, even if you look at it from a link juice prospective... If the page is all links rather than rich unique content with just a few links, its really not benefiting you there either.

(And thats if it's not totally excluded from the Serp's & placed into the Omitted / Subsidiary list as a web ring, link farm, FFA type page, seeing that your using it in a basic html format.)
