you must take care for the strategies and techniques you do in your SEO. any ways that a black hat SEO does is the things you must not do on your site for the basic reasons preventing your site to get penalized or banned. we don't want that to happen, right? now, you must know those things to avoid it.

You can fail in SEO by not getting any relevent links to your site and not making the links accessible using <a> tags. The second less major (but very importent) thing is to use descriptive <title> and well structured headings tags. I don’t think there are any other major factors however there are many other lesser factors.

Tags, H1, Contents, Links, Anchor Texts, alt texts.
