I know if you have one link to www.example.com/page1 and another link to www.example.com/page1#somewhere in the eyes of most or all search engines the links point to the same URL.

But what if you get a bunch of links to www.example.com/page1#somewhere? If there are more of those than just to the page itself, will the search engines stat taking people to a specific part of the page, or just the top?

Named anchors are real handy for getting around big documents, and we have a client with humongous pages, so I want to make sure and do right by them. Chris posted a story about how designers and SEOs are starting to be expected to do the same things and have the same skills. I'm trying to be forward thinking here. Not that it matters, because they're going to keep the anchors, but I wonder if it's going to have any effect?

The # is a browser only operation and SEs ignore anything after it. It is not treated as part of the URL so doesn't created duplicate pages.
