This is not my post. I have nothing whatsoever to do with it. But this comes from someone known throughout the net universe as IncrediBILL. IncrediBILL is one of the foremost authorities on search engines, good bots, bad bots, and about a hundred other things. This guy is freakin' smart, and he's earned my respect (something I very rarely give out).

When you say "tools" are you talking about the software or the people who use the software?

Ok, I just have to ask, is he referring to Keyword Research tools as well.. It was kind of general as far as software tools.

The keyword research tools May be the only tool out there I actually agree with in a sense as far as competitive research & analysis.

Granted, one could blindly focus on building the quality for a phrase they don't know the completive stats from & eventually through Repetition & consistency sit well in the SERP's, However it's the long tail targeting for a competitive edge that I refer to in a minimal amount of time to get a business kick started (While concurrently building more organic quality for the long term results).

Had to ask...

No...just straight rank checking.

Mind you, keyword research tools are what I think will be next on the chopping block as far as useless tools go. They're not there...yet. But as people grow more sophisticated in terms of what they search for and as longtail searches continue to grow in number and in proportion, the idea of targeting keywords and phrases based on a research tool will become less useful in time.

Mind you, I'm talking 2009-2010, maybe even 2011, before that ends up happening. But I can see it coming.
