There are some that believe google may take into account stats from:
1. the toolbar monitoring visits and return visits
2. adsense
3. urchin
There is no way to know for sure.

They're not directly related. High traffic sites have more visitors who seem to enjoy the content, so they tend to have more links with a lot of different anchor text. This site, for example, has links from many users' blogs, describing "a thread about ranking in Google" or any number of subjects and variations. Think of all the links Wikipedia has reinforcing the titles and headings. It's this, and not the traffic, that makes them rank.

SERP ranking has no relation with traffic. Even though your in the #1 spot on SERp, it doesn't mean that it will be visited by a user. The way I see it, visiting a certain site depends on its content or what it has to offer to people/visitors.

I think you're probably wrong there. A very VERY large percentage of people click on the first result anyway. It's handy and they probably think it's there because it's the most relevant (it may or may not be).

The original question was if you receive a lot of traffic, does THIS make your ranking go up, not does having a high ranking give you traffic? The latter part of the question is an obvious yes, but I'm not sure about the first part

The first part (if I get lots of traffic will I be #1 in Google?) is a definite no. Although as Big Daddy G moves toward personalized results, I think this may change. It won't be about traffic, though, it'll be a matter of User X clicks into a particular site fairly often and spends much time there. When that particular user runs a search, (s)he will eventually be more likely to get that site in the results. But when the person living across the street does the same search, they'll get their own set of results.
