Obviously, they're quite different, but not in SEO terms. Do whatever makes sense if there were no such things as search engines.

site.tld/games would be a part of your original site
whereas games.site.tld is a new site

Learned Old Mans advice is best! Forget search engines and design for your visitors - whichever would be best for them and most memorable I'd say.

The basic rule of web design should be (and in many cases is) design for your visitors and work on search engine optimization after, ensuring it doesn't interfere with the visitor experience

A subdomain is essentially a new site, whereas a folder is a part of your site. How does the game fit into the picture? When I launched my blog, it got a subdomain; it's separate from my main site. Putting it on a subdomain helps reinforce that for the people who visit, along with the different template.

for me, its better to use it as a subfolder for it will become a new section of the site. It also add the content of your main domain.

Still, deciding on creating a subdomain is not bad, so, its up to you whether which you like.
