Woc: I've tried and it's worked to some extent. There's a long way to go though, and there's some tough competition out there spewing the kind of rhetoric that people want to hear.

The only thing I can say is...keep trying. The more people that try, and the more often we try it, the more the message sinks in.

No, but thanks for reviving the great idea!
  1. A position can be guaranteed, like fastreplies points out.
  2. Links is all you need.
  3. Toolbar PR means anything at all.
  4. If you want to rank you need 100+ pages.
  5. Google is dumb. Whatever you have up your sleeve, they can't tell.
That's for starters. What are some of the common ones other people have heard? Then we'll start to debunk them.

Remember, EDU\GOV links carry no extra weight because of there TLD extention, the only reason they might have more weight is due to the likely hood they'll recieve more one way back links.

One thing you should think about is the search engine is not a major form of traffic for most websites or any good ones that I know of. Unless you have years to publish content lol. Not to say it doesn't help but finding another way to get traffic from referring sites pays much more traffic then the SE every thought of. 40k uniques in 17 days from one of my link builder system I have(no im not selling it to you) lol. But see and my SE traffic is only 6k which is a fraction.

Having a list of 100 links on a link/"resource" page won't get noticed by Google

It doesn't help that colleges around my area are teaching the kids bad SEO, and they still ramble on how important Meta tags are, and how much search engines use them.

When I was at college a few years back, one of my lecturers was going on about them and how important they are and if done correctly, you will rank at the top. I had a two hour debate with him on how they weren't important and how wrong he was on his views. He still didn't believe me.

Sounds interesting. We're going to do web design in a module sometime next year or possibly the one after, and I'm really looking forward to it. I hope they aren't stuck in the past too though - i.e. teaching people how to design with Dreamweaver and lots of table markup.

Tables are fantastic for markup! They're nice and flat so you can sprad your paper over them, and they have lots of room for pens, too.

DW is probably a bit too advanced for most colleges, It'll be FrontPage 4.

Friend of mine was made redundant last year and took one the web design courses offered by some of these well advertised "training" schemes that you can take to get back into work.
He had been playing with site design in the evenings for a while and was actually more advanced than the trainers.

Nope I'm fairly sure it's Dreamweaver! I've seen the application installed on their computers so I doubt it would be there if we weren't going to use it. We actually used Dreamweaver in High School in IT lessons - I remember it produced 3 pages (or more) of horrible table markup which I had to browser through and attempt to find and explain the purpose of 5 parts. I thought it was fine at the time, but now I know better

I know a lot of schools around here have started using DW, and when I was at uni they started to implement it into a couple of the labs.

Some myths:

* Pretty sites get the most traffic.
* SEO begins after the site has been developed.
* SEO requires regular tweaking.
* SEO is easy to learn.
* SEO is unpredictable.

I don't know about that -- maybe it depends on the type of site, but I get nearly 80 percent of my traffic from search engines and yes, I do use PPC and such. Before I employed the use of PPC, over 90 percent of my traffic came from the SE's.
