Hello,

I am new to blogging. Just want to know is it a good idea to link to your e-commerce website www.example.com from your blog http://blogs.example.com.

I know search engines have a concept of splog, just how restrictive are they about it? Thanks. Sam.

If you're asking that question, then you've likely got the wrong idea in mind, and it's probably "I'll put up a blog on my site, link it to my main storefront site, and all of a sudden I'll receive mad search engine traffic and referrals and sales and profits and WHOOPEE! I'm swimming in cash."

I've got news for you: it doesn't work. People are smarter than that for the most part, and most blog software (including WordPress) has issues that make it search-engine-unfriendly by default. You're going to have to spend some time hacking and twisting and turning and manipulating before you get it to perform the way you want.

If you want to set up a blog on your storefront site, that's fine, but make it something useful. Don't just throw the blog up for the sake of SEO...add some original and unique stuff to it.

I think it's a very good idea to add a blog to your ecommerce site though. That way it will force you to make new entries to your blog and keep updating your page. Search engines love pages which frequently update and add new content.

The blog (3rd level site) will be updated but will the main site benefit from it?
I think it's better to spend time spamming other's blogs that promoting yours
