Are there any issues in publishing articles in which a link to your website is used in the article?

I was talking to a friend of mine, who was saying that he publishes articles to article websites so other sites can use the article. He always includes a link to his site in the article, which helps him building up back links.

Say if Joe Blogg’s publishes an article, and with in that article he links to his website xyz.com. Then several other websites use that article which contain the link to his website, would this have any affect on his ranks?

Those links may or may not be of less value than links on other pages. If they go supplemental because of the duplication, they'll be less helpful. If there's a duplicate content penalty it's the other sites that will pay it, not your friend's.

It also depends how the articles are syndicated. If it's through feeds, there is no problem.

This is the main reason why article directories are made in the first place. Submitting your site to these directories can easily spread your thoughts and links. All are free to use your articles as long as it is intact with all the details you originally wrote.

I think there will be no negative effect to your site if it is published somewhere else. In fact, it will be an additional backlink thus giving more relevancy.

I don’t think duplicate content is beneficial in any way, search engines are very smart they can easily detect duplicate content.

Write original articles and submit them to article directories, it will give you traffic and PR both.

The Google duplicate content penalty is very misunderstood. Google DOES NOT penalise duplicate content. But it will index only 1 version. And it will ignore the links on the pages with the duplicate content.

To get around this, put your articles through an article spinner to create unique versions of them to post.

I wrote a post about it here: Article Spinning

One thing to add is that many if not most of those links probably don't do much to help your friend's site rank. No all links are created equal and because of the duplicate content these links are likely to be seen as very low quality links.

Taking the same article and getting it published on one respected blog on the topic would probably be more beneficial.

.... or write original articles and host them on YOUR site. Why should you be giving free content and traffic to an article site?

If somebody performs a search that matches the article, where do you think they wind up?
That's right, at the article site. Not, your site.
If you hosted the article, you would have received that traffic instead.

Here's the basics of article submission:
You do the work, they get the traffic.

For your effort, you get one effective measly backlink because, duplicate submissions will be ignored by the SEs
If your goal is to increase traffic, stop giving it away. Host your own articles. You will see a much much greater impact than submitting them to other sites.

absolutely yes, so its better to rephrase your article before posting it to other sites or if you want try to get the ideas of your competitor article and then combine it as one.

Some of blog owner who use your article to published on their site doesn't put your site links. They don't recognized who's the owner of article.

These kinds of bloggers violates the rules of the article directories. By doing this, the search engine spiders can easily detect the dupes and probably ban the article page from getting high ranks.

As others have said, Google will simply filter out the duplicates. So if you're going to post your article to different directories and not put it on your own site then it's best to post it to the highest page rank article directory first, then post it to others a couple of weeks later. That way, you're getting the greatest SEO benefit from the backlink.

The best ones I have found are Ezine Article, Go Articles and Article Dashboard.

If you do find your content stolen or used without you permission, you can try to get it removed by contacting the webmaster or taking it a step further by filing a DMCA
