People talk about submitting to social networking sites and getting 1000's of traffic and back links etc. and bla bla bla....

Can someone with knowledge about this process please explain how to do this exactly?

Besides the usually submit to stumbleupon or digg talk. We all know how to do that.

But where does the 1000's of traffic and back links part come into this?

How can site owners accomplish this?

Thanks

By making good content. That's the idea behind the social bookmark sites in the first place.

You can do a little better by learning what each community likes - videos, images, quizzes, stuff like that for Stumble, pro open source stuff for Digg. But once you add your link, which again isn't exactly what they were meant for, it's up to people to vote your page up or down. To get thousands of visitors, you need lots of people to vote for your pages. And to make that happen, you need to make or have pages people are going to want to see.

All the links from all the common and popular social bookmark services are nofollow, so the black links part doesn't really factor in at all. Another way you could get the thousands of visitors is paying for them; Stumble sells PPC at $0.05 per click. I'm pretty sure they guarantee whatever amount of traffic you buy no matter how people vote.

Hmmm at .05 cents per click?

thats sounds really cheap...does anyone have any experience with this ppc campaign from stumble? Did it help ? Get any ROI? Is it worth it?

And can you send the ppc to any page on the net or just the stumble page?

Thanks

People who sign up for sb sites don't usually do it to buy things from random web sites, and they're usually described as "ad blind." So it's probably not going to bring a great ROI, but that really depends on your site. Anyway, Stumble lets you send the traffic they sell to any page you'd like, and choose who gets it by any demographic people enter when they sign up.

I'm thinking about tossing $20 or so into Stumble's ring and seeing how it works out. But the return goes under the 'intangible' column; I'm looking to build name recognition to use later. If I were lookign for a decent return, I'd probably look elsewhere. It's really cheap because if you don't count videos, the average time a Stumbler spends on any given page is probably less than a minute.

This is same as the advertising the product. SEO's done the posting the social sites for tell the social sites member about the site and the product. If some one is interested in that, he will open it. From which the unique traffic for the site is increase.

Many social networks will see site owners as spammers if they start submitting A LOT of their own content, particularly sales web sites. As Forrest rightly said, StumbleUpon does sell traffic. However, people who sign up for StumbleUpon don't want to buy things (as he said), so unless you have quality content that users will enjoy reading (i.e. a blog) or looking at (a picture or video), then don't waste your money. Putting money into buying traffic for a commercial site from StumbleUpon is like throwing that money in the bin.

I'm actually thinking about buying some visitors from Stumble. The price is pretty low, and ... call me an ego maniac ... I can't see many people coming to my better photography or anything on my blog and not being impressed. They send me some free traffic already, but introducing new people to my work is a good thing in the long term.

That's a legitimate use of StumbleUpon in my opinion (although selling traffic is a bit debatable in itself). However, it's not spamming them with commercialised rubbish - just quality photography

Hope that works out for you

I'm not sure if social networking and social bookmarking are the same but I do social networking. With social networking you make a profile on sites just like MySpace and in your profile you can have links to your various sites. Many network owners do allow this as long as your not spamming their members constantly with crap. There's a good tool I use to navigate different social networks and that the My Networks Toolbar This toolbar has hundreds of social networks and quick links to a bunch of graphic and layout sites. It makes social networking a breeze. The great thing about social networking on different sites is you can use the same profiles on all. Alot are similar to MySpace and are very easy to use.

Targeting social bookmarking sites that are more targeted at your niche can bring you traffic which in turn, may also see your site bookmarked at some of the larger bookmarking sites, which may then lead to more links and more exposure.
