It depends on how you define not doing much good. Will links in blog comments help your page rank better? Probably not in most cases, but real people click those links. I pretty good size of my traffic each and every month visited through a comment I left on a blog somewhere. Some of those people go on to subscribe or link to me from their blogs.
If you look at things too myopically, too focused on some small detail you can miss the big picture.

I don't see it as spamming or black hat. Although other people doesn't comment on post but instead just drop a link of their site (that's what I think is spamming). But when you get to really appreciate the effort of the author, that's where we can say that it's a community...
Leaving a real comment is never spam. As long as you have something to say go ahead and say it. Leaving a link without a comment is most likely going to get your comment deleted.

Thing is I have been put of leaving links at all, simple as even when I do put infomation that is relevat and useful, the post will still get deleted sometimes and then my post is gone.
I dont its it black hat but depends on how you post like if you post ooh good post Visit my site today but if you post a long post and then leave text link on bottom its not spamm
but Yes I do comment on blogs only the ones related to my site. Its has very good results too
A link can still be good to get even if it has no benefit for search engines. Real people actually click links. Try not to only think in terms of nofollow and how a search engine sees a link.
If you participate on a blog by commenting and getting to know the blogger and the other people commenting there's a good chance those people will visit your site and get to know you. Many people who now subscribe to my blog first met me while we were both commenting on other blogs.
I've left comments on blogs that made people curious about me. Those people visited my site read some posts and linked to those posts so in the end I did and will continue to get links that search engines do like as a result of blog commenting even if the link on the original comment was nofollowed.

Paul you could also add something to block the spam. If you use WordPress try either Akismet or Spam Karma 2. I use the latter and it catches all, but a few spam comments.
