I was thinking about hiring a company to submit my website to some high PR directories. Will this bring up my PR or is it a waste of money?

Probably, but only by a very small amount.

well;

seeing how PR of the toolbar variety only relates to one SE and is of zero use for rankings, and that's what you are suggesting to use as a criteria...

... The best course of action would be to remove your wallet, make a pile of the paper money and set fire to it, you'll have infinitely more success at that and it will probably cost you much less.

I kindly disagree. I think links still play and will continue to play important part in SERP rankings in all major search engines. PR is also very important if you want your site to rank good in long tail searches and we all know that good ranking in those long tail searches can bring significant traffic.

Nope,
MSN puts very little value on links and anchor text
Yahoo can be swayed by large numbers of links, regardless of anchor text.
Google, it is the anchor text of the links that make a significant, but ever decreasing difference.

REAL PR is a small factor for ranking purposes, but as the toolbar PR display actually bears no resemblance to the ever changing, internal value it should NOT be used as a criteria for making a business decision on whether to pay a third party for directory submissions.

PR counts most for keyword categories with heavy competition from major sites. If you are in a minor category you might want to concentrate on improving your content and keyword density first. Once you can be placed on at least the second page of a keyword category that is desirable to you, buying back-links might give you just enough of an edge to make it to page one.

We're missing the point here which Chris made very saliently...

If I have a website and submit ONLY to directories then sure, I'll get a small percentage of the PR from the page that lists me. However, and here's the kicker...

The page listing me is sooo far down the directory's directory structure and my link buried so deep that I'd have to have thousands of these **** links to even make a significant (and by significant I mean statistically significant, not subjectively significant) difference to my PR.

And PR... What's that got to do with good quality content, landing pages and information that actually displays in search results.

I have some REALLY obscure pages on some of my sites and when I check the referring page it's NEVER internal, it's always Search Engines because the content is so specific only people actually executing a serach for that specific information will ever see it.

Ultimately for me it's about time and how best to invest it.

Hope that's of some use.

Edit...

An example...

Search for Diving Gas Huddersfield and my website is number one in Google. However, the site I will eventually send you to is listed in the serach results right under mine.

Example Here

Theoretically and from experience - it does help in PR building PR is good if you are out to sell ad spaces, links, etc. but if you cater to end users of your products - I suggest you focus more on SERP.

Yes but not a great deal simpley cos in most directorys the pages you get added to have no or very little PR, but it does still help your serps which is more important than any poxy PR.

To get high PR quickly you need links from high PR pages getting loads and loads of links from low PR pages only gets you so far and takes forever to do, but uless you sell links then PR is totally useless anyways and not worth worrying about. What you should care more about is how to get your serps better not PR.

I'm getting told different things each day still and i have worked with search engines for years. Bottom line in my opinion is that its relevant to higher results in some ways but not the focus of the engines.

People say it makes no difference in the slightest but i have experience that suggests it does. However its not the main factor.

Hello friend !

If you submits your links in high page rank directories then it will definitely help your web site to grow up to some extent. But posting to high PR directories are not sufficient, instead of visiting to your web site's link are also important. Therefore to do so you must have to post attractive and short byline which is clearing all about of your web site. There should not be any confusion.

It helps, but do not rely fully on those directories to get you on top of search engines for the keywords you want.

It is OK to submit your site to some high PR directories, it can really help somehow...
But why hire a company when you can do it on your own???
There are many resources in the net where you can find Web directories with high PR for site submission...
There is no need to pay someone...

Like many have said above me, submitting your website to high pr directorys wont help you very much. Personally a rank google as the no1 search engine as i guess anyone else would, i therefore try to target my websites to google as much as possible. Submitting to directories wont help alot for a few reasons. Firstly these directorys are so large and full of so many links that why do you think search engines are going to see yours any higher than anyone elses? Hundreds of thousands of websites have been submitted through these methods and i can assure you that many of of them will have low pr.

Secondly these directories are unlikely to get you any clicks at all and if you do get clicks, it will be in a few months as many of the directories take months to accept links, if not longer.

Bascially its a waste of money, if you want to get higher in search engines make sure you have good keyword density, are linked from alot of relevant websites, and use good anchor text.

You don't need to pay someone to submit your site to searches, unless you realy don't have the time to do it yourself for free. Search for a 'fast free directory submission software' or similar and you'll find something you can download and submit to a large list of directories including high and low PR. Spend some time doing it when your waiting on a download or have nothing to do.
