First of all hello Shruti welcome to the forums, hope you had
fun here same as I do. Anyway Directories Submission as far as
I know is the way to increase your PR and Article Submission is
for Link Building.

No benefit as far rankings are the main sole fact your are fighting for.
Yeah of-course Directories once approved helps you to gain back Links help to incerease link popularity...but see what is quality of those links.

So this is what matters Quality not Quantity.... Go for directories but only those which have very nice reputation ad deserve respect
ELSE doing directory submission will give you NUTS at end and you will realize that you have wasted your Time. Because most of poor directories links will never get crawled or indexed by GOOGLE so what is reason to waste your time


ARTICLE SUbmission: Well can do a bit favour for your site but again only reputed sites take into consideration.
