On the bottom of each of our pages (for a tile contractor site) we have a string of cities seperated by commas. It's on every page, the same.
Is there anything wrong with this technique?

Another thing I may try, is to add links to keywords like: [city] bath remodeling

On every page is somewhat OTT.

You seem to be forgetting the only real rule of SEO, and that is to consider REAL people rather than search engines.

It is important to know that Google only recognizes a certain format when it comes to format:

Street Address
City, ST ZIP

or

Street Address City, ST ZIP

and in some instances

City, ST ZIP

If you are listing anything else, Google will simply recognize it as a word and not a location.

Here is what I suggest, and I know it sounds like a lot of work, but it will do wonders. Build a landing page for each of the cities that the contractor does work in. Build each page around one city, using the last format example that I listed above. If at all possible, try to squeeze in a map from Google or Mapquest, that points to the center of that city. Just go to Google and type in "map of your city", click on "link to this map", and copy the embedded code.

You must link these pages together using "keyword" + "Location" as the anchor text. i.e. "Tile Contractor Dayton OH".

Your keyword meta tag should list your keywords in the same way. "keyword"+"Location". You know you wont ever show up when someone searches the keyword Tile Contractor, and why would you want to. So make sure you are optimizing your page with local keywords.

Hope this helps.< self promo link drops removed >

You should check out buyerzone.com. They have landing pages set up for 100's of cities throughout the US since 1992. No one has flagged them as spam. There are many other sites just the same.

Sure, there are also dating sites with hundreds of thousands of pages for just about every major town in every country.

Doesn't make any the less madlib spam because others do it and seem to get away with it

Mark: If it's working so well for you, why are you setting up Blogger blogs full of affiliate links rather than a series of meaningless landing pages?

(It's a bit of an academic questions, because both ways are total garbage, but I'm just curious.)

Matt: I would suggest to you that the key piece to your SEO efforts isn't in tricks like the one you posted, but in something that you can easily do yourself and that you're already doing. I'm referring to your portfolio; organize that in such a way as to put featured projects on the front of your site (I'd rotate them just to show different stuff, but that's not an SEO thing as much as it is a user thing). The detail you've got on your projects is the kind of original content that SEs, particularly Google, love. If you continue to bring that out and build on it, you'll probably end up having a lot more success than you will with silly pet tricks.
