A related link is one that comes from another page and site which has a topic related to the topic of your page and site. Site owners are unique and will respond to different things. There are different methods for getting links from different people and sites. Some, like a topical directory, might simply let you post your link. Another site might offer an opportunity to write a guest post.
One of the best ways to get links from people is to link to them first. If they have a blog spend time leaving comments. The more you do for someone else the more likely they will want to do something for you.
And yes create unique content that people want to link to. Whatever the topic of your site pay attention to other people in the same industry. Figure out the kind of content they typically link to and create that kind of content. Figure out the things they want, but don't seem to exist and create that too.

If you have a very good website and a lot of traffic, then the people coming to your site will link to it from other sites. But it is a catch 22. It's hard to get traffic without links, and it is hard to get links without traffic. And when you have to worry so much about getting links and traffic, it is hard to make your site very good and fresh.
